TE KOTA

WAIPARA VALLEY - NEW ZEALAND

Chris & Carol Parker have been in the wine business since 1999 and as sole owners of the business since 2002. Carol & Chris are involved in all facets of the wine production from the vineyard through to sales & marketing.Chris and Carol’s interest in wine producing began some 20 years ago with Chris’s home production of various fruit wines, including boysenberry, kiwi-fruit, banana, blackberry, and believe it or not a tamarillo based wine with Carol judging those efforts.

The three Parker children have all worked in the vineyard.

Euan Parker- Euan received first class honours in Biochemistry and subsequently undertook study in Europe under the Eramus Mundus scholarship program to gain his Master Vintage degree. Euan has gained valuable knowledge in both winemaking and marketing spheres. Euan is currently the global marketing director for Mount Cass .

Amber Parker- Amber received first class honours in Molecular genetics and is currently in Europe studying for her Master Vintage Degree under the Eramus programme. It is hoped that on her return to New Zealand she will take work alongside the rest of the family, either in production or marketing

Duncan Parker- Duncan has recently finished his bachelor of arts degree and has worked many harvests on the vineyard. From growing up on the vineyard Duncan understands the varieties and terroir very well and has an excellent nose.

The Vineyard

The vineyard provides maximum protection from the Pacific Ocean's easterly breezes, for the vineyards are tucked under the lee of this landmark.

The smooth stones and gravels left behind by an ice glacier provide free drainage and heat summation for the vines.

With low yields, the grapes are optimally ripened to a very high quality - this is expressed in the flavours and balanced wines.

The vineyards enjoy abundant sunshine in a temperate climate and protection from cool easterly sea breezes by the prominent limestone outcrop of Mount Cass.

The family owned boutique vineyard is committed to sustainable wine production - without compromise, being an accredited member of the Sustainable Winegrowers programme of New Zealand Wine Growers.

Yields are strictly controlled to prevent over-cropping of vines, where we deliberately focus on low yields to enhance fruit character. The wines are carefully handcrafted from vine to your glass from some of oldest vines in the Waipara Valley.

Mount Cass Vineyard was one of the first three vineyards in the Waipara Valley to undertake a project whereby we planted native trees in blocks on the vineyard to encourage beneficial insects, birds and lizards, back into the environment, reducing the need to use pesticides to control insect pests like leaf roller.

The name Te Kota means “shell” in the native Maori language and this is where the shell image comes from on our label, in which is tucked the islands of New Zealand, much in the way our vineyards are tucked in the protective cove of Mount Cass.
